Teatro Dallas is a thirty-six-year-old, Legacy Latinx theater company, the oldest in North Texas. Established in 1985 to give voice to under-represented Latinx communities, our theater seeks to do so through an international lens, honoring the intersection of our varied diasporic cultures. We seek a collaborative and visionary leader who is ready to reach new levels of capacity and artistry for the company. The ideal candidate will be able to build upon the established foundation of the company, and be able to clearly articulate their artistic vision for the organization. This individual will select repertory from a broad range of artists and playwrights with varied backgrounds and styles, develop local actors as versatile artists, and help showcase their talents and skills. This candidate will also have the necessary skill sets in communication, management, coaching, leadership, programming, and production to fulfill that vision. A successful candidate will invest in existing relationships with potential guest directors and actors, funders, and collaborators, and will actively pursue new relationships.

ABOUT OUR THEATER/STRUCTURE

Teatro Dallas is a smaller sized organization operating on $350k a year. We current present at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas, where we are in negotiation for a twenty-five year residency. The center provides two unique theaters, a state of the art black-box theater with capacity for 120, and a 250 seat traditional proscenium style auditorium in which we create our productions. We function with a tiered structure, but due to our smaller size is heavily collaborative/lateral in its distribution of work. The Executive Artistic Director will report to the Board of Teatro Dallas and ultimately oversees hiring/ staff management, which includes the Managing Director, both full-time positions. A part-time Development Director, Associate Artistic Director and management assistant also report to the EAD. Together they collaborate to create a cohesive strategy for the operation and vision of the organization. The EAD position is responsible for management, budget and general operations of the organization. As a theater heavily rooted in the local North Texas Latinx community, the EAD must have skills and acumen in working with diverse partners, including City leadership, government, business, artists, social agencies, and laypersons. The starting base salary range is $65,000 annually, with opportunity for salary growth based on development strategies. Currently benefits are limited to paid vacation and sick leave, but no health insurance/medical.

REQUIREMENTS

  • As this position leads a theater with an international Latinx focus, demonstrated knowledge of Latinx dramaturgical and literary canon, international performance community and practices, culture and language are required
  • Minimum 5 years of producing, curating and/or presenting theatre
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree required
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Knowledge of Excel and Microsoft
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
  • Knowledge of preparation of budgets, financial reports, grant writing skills are desirable

The Executive Artistic Director oversees all aspects of BOTH the management and artistic production including the following responsibilities:

  • Oversee operating budgets
  • Oversee development, grant writing and marketing/branding 
  • Front-facing representative with local community and public 
  • Interface with executive staff of other arts organizations and city agencies
  • Represent Teatro Dallas at forums, panels and civic events 
  • Continue to develop policies and address issues related to racism, equity and parity in the Latinx community
  • Select plays and performances for each season
  • Attend all Board meetings and work with board president on reports 
  • Set and oversee the production schedule for the season with the Associate Artistic Director
  • Hire artists, directors, performers and actors, stage managers, designers, production staff, etc. with support from the Managing Director
  • Oversee new play development such as commissioning playwrights and hiring artistic teams to develop new work for productions
