Nuevo Mundo (A New Directors Festival)

With Guest Mentors Kathleen Culebro (Founding Artistic Director of Amphibian Stage), Jeffrey Colangelo (Founding Artistic Director of Prism Movement Co.), and Guinea Bennett-Price (Founding Artistic Director of Soul Rep Theatre Co.).

Celebrating forty years of developing new artists, we are expanding on our biennial international festivals with the addition of Nuevo Mundo, a festival to incubate new directors and playwrights. We will select three talented young directors that are under-represented on Dallas’ stages and pair them with seasoned directors to mentor and support their selections of plays they believe deserve to be seen. Explore the next generation of new voices connecting Dallas to the global South.

Is God Is by Aleshea Harris, directed by Joi Elise Green

February 5th – 7th

Is God Is follows 21-year-old twin sisters Racine and Anaia, who embark on a cross-country quest for revenge against their father after discovering he set them and their mother on fire when they were babies.

Peak Stuff by Billie Collins, directed by Danelle Morrow

March 5th – 7th
Alice is done with fast fashion. Ben can’t stop buying trainers. And Charlie just wants to sell out… one organ at a time. This play is performed together by one actor and one musician.
Billie Collins’s play Peak Stuff is a fast-paced, funny, fearless deep-dive into consumer culture. In an age of retail therapy, climate crisis and click and collect – how does our ‘stuff’ define us? And have we reached peak stuff?
Hookman by Lauren Yee, directed by Monserrat Rodriguez
April 2nd – 4th
Freshman year at college is hard when your roommate is weird, you’re feeling homesick, and a hook-handed serial killer is slashing girls. But if Lexi can discover what really happened to her high school best friend on that car ride to the movies, everything will be okay. In this existential slasher comedy, Hookman, Lexi and her friends learn what it means to grow up – and it’s not pretty.
